Brand Hallucination.

When an AI answer engine states something false about a brand, its pricing, its products, or its policies, as if it were fact. For agencies, it is a brand-safety problem that lives entirely outside any campaign the agency actually ran.

What it is

A working definition of Brand Hallucination.

Brand hallucination happens when a large language model generates an answer about a company that sounds authoritative but is wrong. It might quote a price the brand never charged, describe a product feature that doesn’t exist, or attribute a policy, a return window, a warranty term, that the brand never offered. Unlike a typical AI hallucination, which is a general accuracy problem, brand hallucination specifically damages a business’s reputation or creates real customer confusion.

The problem is growing because more people now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews about a brand instead of visiting the brand’s own site. When the model’s answer is wrong, the brand often doesn’t find out until a customer shows up expecting a deal or a policy the company never had.

Why ad agencies care

Why Brand Hallucination matters in agency work.

Brand hallucination sits in a gap most agencies haven’t been asked to own yet, but clients are starting to notice the gap exists.

It happens without any media spend. A brand can be hallucinated about even if it has never run an ad, which means the usual brand-safety tools, which watch ad placements, not AI answers, don’t catch it.

It is hard to correct through normal channels. There is no support ticket for “please stop telling people we offer free returns.” Fixing it usually means improving what the model has to draw on: better structured data, clearer public information, more authoritative sources it can cite instead.

It is becoming a client-facing question. As AI answer engines become a real source of first impressions, clients are starting to ask agencies to monitor what these tools say about them, the same way agencies already monitor social sentiment or search rankings.

In practice

What brand hallucination looks like inside a working ad agency.

A retail client’s AI overview reports a lifetime warranty on a product line the brand only ever warrantied for two years. Customer service starts fielding angry calls from people who read that answer, wrote it down, and now expect the agency’s client to honor it. The agency runs a spot-check across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for the client’s other core products, finds two more inaccuracies, and adds a monthly AI-answer audit to the account’s reporting alongside the usual search and social numbers.
