AI Glossary · Letter A

Ambient Agent.

An AI agent that stays active inside a workspace like Slack, watching conversations and acting on its own, instead of waiting to be tagged.

Also known as Always-on agent, ambient AI

What it is

A working definition of Ambient Agent.

An ambient agent runs continuously inside a tool your team already uses, most often a chat app like Slack, rather than living in a separate window you have to open. It reads new messages as they arrive, keeps a memory of what has happened in a channel over time, and can act, flagging a task, drafting a reply, updating a doc, without anyone explicitly summoning it first.

This is a step beyond the “mention it and wait for a reply” model most people are used to. Anthropic’s Claude Tag, which rolled into Slack in 2026, is a mainstream example: switched to ambient mode, it monitors a channel and can intervene in a conversation it was not tagged into. That capability is powerful and also why vendors ship it off by default, an agent that can act unprompted needs guardrails before it gets access to a live channel.

Why ad agencies care

Why Ambient Agent matters in agency work.

Agency work happens in chat threads and client channels all day long, which makes ambient agents genuinely useful and genuinely risky at the same time.

It can catch what falls through the cracks. An ambient agent watching a client channel can flag an unanswered question, surface a deadline buried in a thread from three days ago, or draft a status update without anyone remembering to ask for it.

It changes what access means. Giving an agent ambient access to a client Slack channel means it sees everything posted there, including anything shared off the record. That is a different risk profile than a tool someone opens and closes on purpose.

It needs an off switch and a review period. Most agencies are better served turning ambient mode on for internal channels first, watching what it actually does unsupervised for a few weeks, before pointing it at a client-facing space.

In practice

What an ambient agent looks like inside a working ad agency.

An agency’s account team turns on an ambient agent in their internal Slack channel for a retail client account. For two weeks it just summarizes the day’s activity each evening, useful but unremarkable. In week three, a strategist mentions offhand that the client wants creative concepts by Friday, no formal brief, no ticket. The agent picks it up, creates a task in the project tool, tags the two creatives who worked the account last quarter, and drops a reminder the morning of. Nobody asked it to. That is the case for ambient mode, and it is also exactly why the agency waited three weeks and tested it internally before deciding whether to turn it on in the client’s shared channel at all.
