Deep research is an AI mode that plans a research task, searches many sources, and returns a cited report. For agencies, it turns days of desk research into a first draft in minutes.
Also known as AI research agent, agentic research
Deep research is a feature in major AI tools where the model takes a question, breaks it into sub-questions, runs many searches, reads the results, and assembles a long, sourced report. It is an agent doing a research loop on its own, usually for several minutes, rather than a single question and answer.
The output reads like an analyst’s briefing, with citations. That makes it persuasive, which is also the risk: a confident report can still contain misread sources, outdated figures, or claims the cited page does not support. It is a strong first draft, not a finished fact base.
Agencies spend a large share of early project time on research, so this is one of the more practical uses of AI in the building.
Faster starts. Competitor scans, category overviews, and audience background that once took a junior team a day or two can be drafted in one sitting.
Wider coverage. The model reads far more pages than a person would in the same time, which surfaces angles a quick search misses.
Verification is the job. Every number that will appear in a client deck needs a human to open the source and confirm it says what the report claims.
A new-business team has two days to prepare for a pitch to a regional furniture retailer. They run deep research on the category, the retailer’s three closest competitors, and recent shifts in how shoppers research furniture online. Twenty minutes later they have a 12-page cited report. A strategist spends the afternoon opening the sources behind the 15 claims they plan to use. Two statistics turn out to be from a 2022 survey, and one competitor detail is wrong. The corrected, verified version becomes the backbone of the pitch’s insight section.
