AI Glossary · Letter A

AI Mode.

AI Mode is Google’s conversational search experience that answers multi-step questions with generated responses instead of a list of links.

Also known as Google AI Mode, AI search mode

What it is

A working definition of AI Mode.

AI Mode is a search interface where people ask longer, more conversational questions and get a synthesized answer with a few cited sources. Follow-up questions continue the thread, so a single session can replace several traditional searches.

Google’s Search Console now reports impressions that appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, but it does not include click data. That leaves marketers with partial visibility into a surface that is growing.

Why ad agencies care

Why AI Mode matters in agency work.

AI Mode changes how brands are found and how that discovery gets measured.

Visibility without clicks. A brand can be cited in an answer and never receive a visit. Reporting needs to separate being seen from being clicked.

Content has to be citable. Clear, specific, well-structured pages are more likely to be pulled into answers than vague category copy.

Query behavior shifts. Longer, more specific questions mean fewer short head terms and more scenario-based searches that agencies should map for each client.

In practice

What AI Mode looks like inside a working ad agency.

An agency’s SEO lead notices a client’s organic clicks are flat while impressions climb. She pulls the new generative reporting in Search Console and sees the brand cited in AI answers for several comparison questions. The team rewrites two comparison pages with clearer specs and pricing, then adds a line to the monthly report tracking AI impressions next to clicks so the client sees influence that clicks alone miss.
