Fully AI-generated personas, with faces, voices, and personalities, built to create content and endorse products the way a human influencer would.
Also known as Virtual influencers, AI influencers, digital humans
A synthetic influencer is a fictional persona generated and operated with AI tools rather than a real person behind the account. Some are entirely computer-generated, built from 3D models or generative image and video tools; others pair an AI-generated voice and likeness with a human team writing the persona’s opinions and posting on their behalf. Either way, the follower on the other end of the feed is engaging with a character that has no physical existence.
The category is not brand new, virtual influencers date back to the mid-2010s, but 2026’s generative video and voice tools have made producing a convincing synthetic influencer dramatically cheaper and faster, moving it from a novelty a few well-funded brands could afford into a tool smaller brands and agencies are testing too.
Synthetic influencers sit at the intersection of two things agencies are already juggling: influencer marketing budgets and generative AI production tools.
They remove the scheduling and behavior risk of a human influencer. A synthetic persona never has a bad week, goes off-message, or ages out of a target demo, which is exactly why some clients are asking about them.
Disclosure rules apply, and they are not settled everywhere. Regulators in several markets are actively updating guidance on when a synthetic persona needs to be labeled as AI-generated, and getting it wrong is a client liability, not just an agency one.
Audience trust reacts differently to synthetic personas than to real ones. Some audiences respond fine; others react to an unlabeled synthetic influencer as a trust violation the moment it is discovered, which makes disclosure a creative decision as much as a legal one.
A beauty brand asks its agency to build a synthetic influencer to front a new product line year-round without the cost or unpredictability of a human ambassador contract. The agency builds the persona’s voice and visual identity, but insists on a clear AI-generated disclosure in the bio and on sponsored posts from day one, having seen competitor brands take a reputational hit after followers discovered an undisclosed synthetic persona on their own.
